Overview
Walk the most preserved stretch of the Nakasendo — the ancient highway that once connected Edo to Kyoto. Three days through cedar forests, past persimmon trees and wooden inns that have stood since the Edo period.
Highlights
- —Tsumago-juku — the best-preserved post town in Japan
- —Stone-paved Magome Pass trail through cedar forest
- —Local family lunch at a 200-year-old farmhouse
- —Evening sake tasting with the innkeeper
- —Private access to spots closed to tour groups
Itinerary
Day 1
Tokyo → Nagiso
Morning train from Shinjuku. Arrive Tsumago by noon. Afternoon walk through the post town with Julian. Dinner and overnight at a family-run ryokan.
Day 2
Tsumago → Magome Pass
The full 8km trail. Stone-paved path, waterfalls, cedar groves. Lunch at a farmhouse halfway. Arrive Magome late afternoon. Free evening.
Day 3
Magome → Tokyo
Morning at leisure in Magome. Julian's recommended coffee stop. Train back to Shinjuku, arriving early afternoon.
Julian's note
“Most people do this trail in a day trip and miss everything. The magic is in staying overnight — when the tour buses leave and the post town goes quiet. That's when the innkeeper brings out the good sake.”
